In a recent
small business report on MarketWatch, the Intuit Small Business Employment Index showed a slight, but steady increase in wages and hours worked for employees at specific
small businesses in June. The report shows that employment for these small businesses grew by 0.09 percent in June, which equals a 1.10 percent annual
growth rate.
Intuit Inc. also reports that there were approximately 18,000 new jobs created in June as well. This makes the total number of new jobs since October
2009, up to 330,000. The company collects its information from small business entities that use the Intuit Online Payroll system.
Dr. Susan Woodward, a nationally recognized economist, says that while employment is on the slight rise for the index, which she helped create with
Intuit, it also showed a hesitated improvement in June than in previous months. The cause of this is clear to recognize. Small businesses, like many
others, have been affected by the surrounding economy, with other financial and employment factors.
However, the labor market has a sufficient number of prospective workers, due to a higher-than-normal national unemployment rate. For companies who have the extra
capital, the need to begin hiring at a more aggressive pace is there. However, the issue is that most are reticent to hire more individuals, because of
the relative perception of the economic predicament.
Compensation per worker also grew by 0.3 percent in June, up to $2,577 per month. An earlier estimate for the month of May put this number at $2,570.
There was an additional increase to the monthly hours worked as well. For June, the total amount of hours worked on average was 103.5, compared to the
earlier estimate of 103.4 hours in May. Overall, the averages are a $30,900 salary per year for all employees, and a 23.5-hour workweek for
those who are employed hourly.
The data that was collected and summed-up was based on information from the Intuit Online Payroll system. It originated from 57,000 small businesses, each with no
more than 20 employees. The index is important to small business because the smallest of employers, the ones with 20 or less employees, represent
around 87 percent of the entire U.S. private employer base, with around 20 million employed individuals.
